What is SpellRead™?
SpellRead™ is a results-driven, scientifically evaluated, intensive reading intervention program for students who struggle with reading acquisition, who are not fluent readers and who do not retain or comprehend what they read.
SpellRead™ is effective for individuals who:
- Are ages 5 through adult.
- Have diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disabilities that impair their reading ability.
- Are receiving or have received special services at school for reading difficulties.
- Have found other reading programs ineffective.
- Are currently struggling to acquire reading skills.
- Have historically struggled to become efficient and effective readers.
- Are functioning one or more years below grade level due to reading difficulties.
How Does SpellRead™ Work?
SpellRead’s™ scientifically proven methods re-train the brain to make reading an effortless process. SpellRead transforms students who have difficulty reading into efficient, effective readers through instruction in phonemic awareness, phonemic decoding, spelling, reading fluency, reading comprehension and writing.
SpellRead™ has three phases:
- Phase A teaches each of the 44 sounds of the English language, beginning with those that are easiest to hear and manipulate.
- Phase B teaches the secondary vowels and consonant blends, and takes students to the two-syllable level.
- Phase C teaches clusters, verb endings and syllabication to a polysyllabic level.
Kaplan Tutoring’s SpellRead™ Program includes 90 hours of private (1:1) or small group (3:1) tutoring. Each session includes:
- Dynamic and engaging instruction with an expert Kaplan tutor.
- Phonemic and phonetic activities.
- Linguistic Foundations: Phonological-Auditory Training which re-trains the way the brain processes phonemic and phonetic information.
- Active Reading: language-based reading and writing.
- Language-rich reading from leveled readers and popular trade books.
- Discussion and writing to help students match auditory processing with written language.
Kaplan Tutoring students also have unlimited access to more than 1,000 hours of adaptive, interactive online math and reading instruction and the popular online Kaplan Tutoring Reward Zone to keep kids motivated and focused on progress.
